ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS The English language arts curriculum is organized around six strands for second grade students. The strands are Reading Literature, Reading Information Reading Foundations, Writing, Speaking, and Language. Second grade students build their knowledge of English Language Arts on the foundational skills they mastered in Kindergarten and First Grade. Skills required for using the written language become more complex and students read a wider variety of texts with more complex vocabulary, they also write to express multiple ideas about a topic. MATHEMATICS The curriculum standards place an emphasis on eight mathematical practices. These practices are strategies for thinking through and solving mathematical problems. Second grade students will use the following mathematical practices: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments to critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. The standards are organized into four domains.
